Corrina Corrina seeks repeat in Harry Henson Stakes
SUNLAND PARK — New Mexico’s all-time leading thoroughbred Corrina Corrina will be looking to defend her title in the 32nd running of the $100,000 Harry Henson Stakes on Sunday at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.
Trained by Gary Cross for owner/breeder Derrick W. Jenkins, Corrina Corrina has been installed as the 2-1 morning line favorite in the Harry Henson Stakes, one of six stakes races on a massive thoroughbred card headlined by the $500,000 Sunland Derby.
A 7-year-old mare by Mr. Trieste, Corrina Corrina has won 22 times from 43 starts and has amassed more than $1.5 million in earnings. Her win total and earnings mark are both records for thoroughbreds bred in the state of New Mexico.
Corrina Corrina is coming off a second place finish in the New Mexico State Racing Commission Stakes over this course last time out. In 15 starts at Sunland Park, Corrina Corrina has won nine times, including a 4-length victory in last year’s Harry Henson Stakes.
The Harry Henson Stakes will be run as the eighth race on the Sunday program. At a distance of one mile, the race may well favor Corrina Corrina who has seven wins and two second-place finishes in nine starts at this distance.
Corrina Corrina is the only New Mexico-bred running in the Harry Henson Stakes. She will be ridden once again by Tracy Hebert and will break from post six in the seven-horse field.
