Impressive field set to face off in $70,000 Jimmy Drake Stakes
FARMINGTON – Tungsten Racing Partnership’s Alamos will search for his third straight stakes win when he loads into the starting gate as the 3-1 morning-line favorite in Friday’s $70,000 Jimmy Drake Stakes.
Trained by Tony Sedillo and bred in New Mexico by MJ Farms, the 4-year-old son of Eye Am King enters the Drake Stakes off back-to-back wins. He took the Lovington Stakes against open company at Zia Park last December and most recently won the Pepsi Cola Stakes on Feb. 14 at Sunland Park.
Alamos has seven wins from 16 career starts and has earned more than $168,000. He will break from the outside post in the 10-horse field under jockey Christian Ramos.
Purchased for $185,000 at the 2023 Ruidoso New Mexico Bred Quarter Horse Yearling Sale, Alamos has won three of his last four starts but is seeking his first win at SunRay Park and Casino. He finished off the board in last year’s New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity.
Jesses Wish, the 7-2 second choice, is looking to snap a four-race losing streak for trainer Jose DeHerrera. The 6-year-old son of Jesse James Jr. finished a neck behind Alamos in the Pepsi Cola Stakes. His most recent win came against allowance company last October at Albuquerque Downs.
Owned by Javier Chavez and Heysol Howlet and bred by MJ Farms, Jesses Wish has five wins from 28 starts with earnings approaching $370,000. He will be ridden by Jorge Nieto-Saenz from post six. The Drake Stakes will be run at 350 yards as the ninth race on the program.
The field entered for the Drake Stakes has combined for 65 wins and more than $2.97 million in earnings. Pick Your Pour, with more than $441,000, is the top money-earner in the field.
Owned by Orlando Granillo, Azucena Mendoza and Rene Mendoza and trained by Zachary Quezada, Pick Your Pour is listed at 15-1 on the morning line. He will break from the rail under Sergio Becerra Jr.
Pavel, coming off a third-place effort in the Pepsi Cola Stakes, is winless in his last nine starts. However, he has two wins from three starts at SunRay Park, including the 2024 New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity. Trained by David Gomez-Barraza and ridden by Luis Martinez, Pavel will break from post five as the 9-2 third choice.
