Da Edge Of Grey narrowly prevails in Jimmy Drake Stakes

FARMINGTON — Jockey Joseph Belloc Jr. guided Da Edge of Gray to a narrow, front-running victory win in Friday’s $70,000 Jimmy Drake Stakes at SunRay Park and Casino.

Trained by James J. Gonzales III for owner Rex Wells, Da Edge of Gray snapped a two-race losing streak while also earning the second stakes win of his career.

After a sharp getaway from the gate, Da Edge of Gray battled on the front end in the 350 yard journey. He led from start to finish and prevailed by a head in a wind-aided final time of 17.22 seconds.

A son of Big Daddy Cartel, Da Edge of Gray was purchased by Wells at the 2022 Ruidoso New Mexico Bred QH Yearling Sale for $59,000. Da Edge of Gray has now won seven times from 19 career starts. His win in the Drake Stakes increases his lifetime earnings to more than $172,000. His only other stakes win came last summer at Ruidoso Downs where he won the Jess Burner Stakes. Da Edge of Gray is a perfect 2-for-2 over the SunRay Park course.

Sent off at odds of 7-to-1, Da Edge of Gray returned $16.00 to his winning backers. The $2 exacta with runner up The Calling paid back $219.40. Post time favorite Alamos settled for third with Jesses Wish rounding out the top four finishers.
