A total of 125 New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds, including Remington Park maiden winners Leading Corona and Abijah, are entered in Friday’s Mountain Top Futurity (RG2) trials at Ruidoso Downs.

Post time for the first of 13 350-yard trials is set for 12 p.m. (MDT). Of the 125 state-bred juveniles entered, 110 will be making their first career starts.<p>

A son of the Corona Cartel stallion Big Daddy Cartel and a $45,000 yearing purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, Leading Cartel is trained by Mike Robbins for owner Reliance Ranches LLC. The bay gelding made his debut with a three-quarter length victory in a 300-yard maiden-special-weight dash at Remington Park on May 1.

Leading Cartel drew post 4 and will be ridden by Edgar Martinez in the eighth heat.

Abijah was claimed by owner Julio Gonzalez for $15,000 at Remington Park on April 23. The gray First Moonflash gelding won that 330-yard dash by three-quarters of a length as the 9-5 favorite.

A $22,000 yearling buy last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, Abijah drew post 2 and will be ridden by Juan Carlos Rivas for trainer Juan M. Gonzalez in the 13th trial.

Other noteworthy New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds entered in Friday’s trials include first-time starters Flash Me To The Moon, Get Ripped, and Ripp. A $117,000 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, Flash Me The Moon is trained by Mike Joiner for owners Johnny Trotter and Stan Sigman.The brown First Moonflash gelding is out of Lady Jessie Dee, an unraced 10-year-old daughter of champion Mr Jess Perry. His second dam, the Dash For Cash mare My Dashing Lady, won the 1999 Rainbow Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.

Flash Me The Moon drew post 9 and will be ridden by Raul Ramirez Jr. in the fourth trial.

Get Ripped is trained by Jaime Aldavaz Jr. for owner Martin C. Ybarra Jr. A $115,000 yearling buy, the chestnut Woodbridge filly is out of Ms Riptide, a winning daughter of Ocean Runaway who ran second in the 2010 AQHA Sam Houston Derby Challenge Stakes (G3).

Get Ripped drew the rail post and will be ridden by Manuel Gutierrez in the 10th heat.

Ripp was purchased for $105,000 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale. A half brother to Get Ripped, the sorrel Big Daddy Cartel is trained by Blane Wood for owners E. Gene Bradley and Tod Bradley.

Ripp drew post 3 and will be ridden by Ricky Ramirez.

The 10 fastest qualifiers from Friday’s Mountain Top Futurity trials will meet in the $350,000-est. final on June 13.
