A total of 128 New Mexico-bred 2-year-old Quarter Horses are entered in Friday’s 350-yard Mountain Top Futurity (RG2) trials at Ruidoso Downs.

Jesses Wish (pictured) and Cruzin For Chickz, the winner and runner-up, respectively, of the April 3, $313,000 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park, top the list of trial entries. A gelded son of Jesse James Jr trained by James Gonzales III for owners Javier M. Chavez and Heysol Howlet, Jesses Wish was a $50,000 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs. Jesses Wish has earned $152,465 from two outs.

Jesses Wish drew post 5 and will be ridden by Mario Delgado in the 10th of 13 trials.

Cruzin For Chickz races for Curtis Crenwelge, Jim Laird and Jose Espinosa from the barn of trainer Wes Giles. A homebred son of Jess A Chicks, the gelding is a maiden, but he has banked $58,125 from just two starts.

Cruzin For Chickz drew post 6 and will be ridden by Adrian Ramos in the seventh heat.

Two of the entries in the Mountain Top Futurity trials — Ricanelo and Ima Bigg Rush — will be facing state-breds for the first time after successful spring campaigns at Remington Park in Oklahoma City. Ricanelo, a gelded son of Big Daddy Cartel and the $90,000 sale-topper at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, is coming off of a fourth-place finish, three-quarters of a length behind winner Tres Crystals, in the March 19, $441,000 Oklahoma Futurity (G2). Trey Wood trains Ricanelo for owners Gene Bradley and Tod Bradley.

Ricanelo drew post 3 and will be ridden by Tanner Thedford in the second trial.

Ima Bigg Rush banked $19,023 from three outs at Remington Park, and he ran seventh in the Oklahoma Futurity. Julio Corral trains the Big Daddy Cartel gelding for owner Jose Meraz, who purchased Ima Bigg Rush for $50,000 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale.

Ima Bigg Rush drew post 5 and will be ridden by Ramiro Garcia in the fourth heat.

Other prominent entries include Cartel Racer, a stakes-winning gray son of Big Daddy Cartel trained by Eric Valenzuela for owners Empire Racing and Pavon Racing LLC. Cartel Racer broke his maiden with a head victory as the 5-2 favorite in the April 3, $50,000 New Mexican Spring Fling Stakes (R) at Sunland Park.

Cartel Racer drew post 5 and will be ridden by Sergio Becerra Jr. in the sixth trial.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the June 19, $350,000 Mountain Top Quarter Horse Futurity final.
