Fincher sends out three in New Mexico Breeders’ Derby

SUNLAND PARK — Buy Local (pictured), a three-length winner last time out in the Red Hedeman Mile, has been installed as the 2-to-1 morning line choice in Sunday’s 21st running of the $175,000-guaranteed New Mexico Breeders Derby at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.

Owned by J. Kirk and Judy Robison and trained by Todd Fincher, Buy Local will be in search of his third career win Sunday in the NM Breeders’ Derby. The son of Sporting Chance broke his maiden as a 2-year-old last November. After three straight minor placings in consecutive stakes races, Buy Local stretched out to a mile and raced virtually gate-to-wire in his most recent start.

Buy Local has two wins from eight starts and has earned more than $141,000.

Bred in New Mexico by J. Kirk Robison, Judy Robison & Downstream Racing, LLC, Buy Local will break from post two in the NM Breeders’ Derby and will be piloted by Christian Ramos.

Fincher and the aforementioned connections will also be represented by Cash Waterfall, listed as the 5-to-2 second choice on the morning line with Luis Valenzuela in the irons.

Also a son of Sporting Chance, Cash Waterfall was third behind Buy Local in the Red Hedeman Mile last time out. Prior to that, he broke his maiden last November at Zia Park and has finished no worse than third in six career starts. Sporting Chance has earned more than $95,000 in his career and will break from post four in the six-horse field for the 1 1/16 mile NM Breeders Derby which will be run as the seventh race on the Sunday program.

Fincher’s third entrant in the NM Breeders Derby is Ghosted Again, a recent maiden winner over this course owned by the Peacock Family Racing Stable, LLC and slated to be ridden by Oscar Andrade, Jr.

Ghosted Again, a son of Runaway Ghost is 4-to-1 on the morning line and will break from the outside post.

Trainer Dick Cappellucci will saddle lightly raced American Century in the NM Breeders Derby. The son of American Anthem was a sharp maiden winner in his debut here on March 9.

Owned by Glen Robertson and Bobby McQueen, American Century will be asked to race over a route of ground in just his second career start and will break from the rail under Luis Negron as the 3-to-1 third choice on the morning line.
