FARMINGTON – Trainer Tony Sedillo saddled the 1-2 finishers in the $216,116 New Mexico Breeders Futurity, with S Super King narrowly prevailing over stablemate Fire Powwer on the second to final day of the live racing season at SunRay Park and Casino on Saturday afternoon.

Jockey Omar Iturralde had S Super King on the engine and in the clear right from the start of the 350-yard dash, battling for the lead with Fire Powwer and Mauro Salcedo for the final 100 yards. The top pair hit the wire together with S Super King winning by a nose.

Owned by CHR Racing, S Super King now has two wins from three career starts. The son of Eye Am King broke his maiden here April 25 when he won a trial for the NM Breeders Futurity. With his win, S Super King has now amassed earnings of more than $103,000.

Sent off at odds of 3.80-to-1, S Super King ran the 350 yards in a final time of 17.4 seconds and returned $9.60 to his winning backers. The $2 exacta with stablemate Fire Powwer, also owned by CHR Racing, paid back $42.80.

Post time favorite Sure Hit finished third under jockey Jose Enriquez, while Start Something Big rounded out the top four finishers.

The win in the NM Breeders Futurity gives Sedillo a slight lead in the quarter horse trainer standings heading into Sunday’s closing day program. Sedillo has six winners this season, one ahead of James J. Gonzales III and two in front of David Gomez-Barraza, Ismael Villalobos and Julian Honesto.
