Alamos storms home to win Pepsi Cola Stakes
SUNLAND PARK — Alamos found his best stride in the final yards Saturday, storming down the center of the track to win the 23rd running of the $80,000 Pepsi Cola Stakes at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino.
Under jockey Christian Ramos, the 4-year-old gelding pulled away to win by a neck, stopping the clock at 16.966 seconds for the 350-yard dash. The effort earned him a 103 Equibase Speed Index.
Owned by the Tungsten Racing Partnership and trained by Tony Sedillo, Alamos entered the starting gate coming off a victory against open company in the Lovington Stakes at Zia Park. Saturday’s win improved the New Mexico-bred’s lifetime record to seven victories from 16 starts, pushing his career earnings past $168,000.
Alamos was bred by MJ Farms and was a $185,000 purchase at the 2023 Ruidoso New Mexico Bred Quarter Horse Yearling Sale. The son of Eye Am King was the heavy 7-5 post-time favorite, returning $4.80 to his backers.
Jesses Wish finished second, while Pavel took third. The Calling rounded out the top four. The $2 exacta featuring the top two finishers paid $22.40.
The field was reduced to nine runners following the early scratches of JM Famousberry and Pick Your Pour.
