New Mexico’s leading state-bred distaffers, Corrina Corrina (pictured) and Bella Dona, will renew their rivalry in Friday’s 5 1/2-furlong, $100,000 New Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap (R), the opening day feature at Sunland Park Racetrack.

The 9-5 morning-line favorite, Corrina Corrina is trained by Gary Cross for owner Derrick W. Jenkins. The homebred 5-year-old Mr. Trieste mare is coming off of a 2023 campaign during which she earned $398,000 from eight races and won five stakes, including the 1-mile, $200,000 Peppers Pride New Mexico Classics Distaff Championship (R) at Zia Park on November 27.

All told, Corrina Corrina has won 11 of 23 starts — including three of six at Sunland Park — and she has banked $753,870. The mare drew post 7 and will be ridden by Tracy Hebert.

Bella Dona is a homebred 5-year-old daughter of Attila’s Storm trained by Simon Buechler for owners Robert M. Driggers, Del Rae Driggers, and Ben Lee Ivey. The mare has earned $858,918 and has won 11 stakes from 17 outs, and she ended her 4-year-old season with a wire-to-wire, 4 1/4-length victory in the November 27, 6-furlong New Mexico Classics Distaff Sprint Championship Stakes (R) at Zia Park.

Bella Dona has won three of her four races at Sunland Park. The mare drew post 4 and will be ridden by Luis A. Fuentes.
