Two trials run August 2 at Albuquerque Downs determined the field for the August 18, $97,628 Rio Grande Senor Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-old Thoroughbred colts and geldings at Albuquerque Downs.

Holy Rebel, a homebred son of the Midnight Lute stallion Holy Lute racing for Robert M. Driggers, Del Rae Driggers, and Ben Lee Ivey, won the first trial by a neck while covering 5 furlongs in :59.37. Enrique Gomez rode the gray or roan gelding for trainer Simon Buechler.

Holy Rebel was coming off of a 2 1/2-length victory in a 5-furlong Mountain Top Futurity (R) trial at Ruidoso Downs on June 7. The gelding is one of two winners from as many starters produced by Sidewinder Sally, a homebred daughter of the Mr. Greeley stallion Mr. Gold Mover and winner of the 2017 New Mexico Classics Oaks Championship (R) at Zia Park.

Holy Rebel is a half brother to Sidewinder Slick, a Stellar Rain gelding who ran third in this year’s Kendrick Stakes (R) at SunRay Park. Holy Rebel has won both of his outs and has earned $12,000.

Holy Hank (pictured), another homebred Holy Lute gelding trained by Simon Buechler for owners Robert M. Driggers, Del Rae Driggers, and Ben Lee Ivey, won the second trial by 2 1/2 lengths in :58.60. Tracy Hebert rode Holy Hank, who was making his career debut.

Holy Hank is out of City Veil, a winning New Mexico-bred daughter of the Saint Ballado stallion Gotham City. A 2008 foal, City Veil has produced three winners from as many starters.
