Surfz Up, a daughter of the Corona Cartel stallion Corona Surfer owned by Guadalupe Cortez, is one of 12 state-bred 2-year-old Quarter Horses entered in Sunday’s 400-yard, $50,000 New Mexico State Fair Juvenile Stakes (R) at Albuquerque Downs.
Surfz Up has earned $30,121 from three starts, and her resume includes a fourth-place finish, a half of a length behind winner Leading Cartel, in the 350-yard, $334,000 Mountain Top Futurity (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs on June 13. An $18,000 yearling purchase from breeder Debra Laney at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, the filly drew post 5 and will be ridden by Adrian Ramos for trainer Sergio Ibarra.
Other contenders include Ezra Lee’s Waitanotherdayamanda, a homebred daughter of the One Famous Eagle stallion One Handsome Man and the lone two-time winner in the field. The bay filly has won two of four starts, including a New Mexico State Fair Futurity (RG3) trial on August 28, and she has banked $10,094.
Waitanotherdayamanda drew post 9 and will be ridden by Alan Hernandez for trainer Wes Giles.
