Two trials run at Albuquerque Downs on Friday set the field for the August 18, $129,089 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred Thoroughbred 2-year-old fillies.

Marked Kiss (pictured) and American Cherub won the two 5-furlong heats. Trained by Chris Zamora for owner Jana Trotter, Marked Kiss won the first trial by 1 1/4 lengths in :58.51. Alejandro Medellin rode the bay daughter of the Bernardini stallion Marking.

Marked Kiss was coming off of a third-place finish in a 5-furlong Mountain Top Futurity (R) trial at Ruidoso Downs on June 7. The filly was bred by Fred Alexander and Todd Fincher, and was purchased as a yearling for $100,000 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale.

Marked Kiss is out of Back Seat Kiss, a winning 10-year-old daughter of the Hennessy stallion Roll Hennessy Roll who ran third in the 2016 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs. Her second dam, the unraced Kentucky-bred Silver Charm mare Back Seat Charm, produced two multiple stakes winners, including 2012 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) winner Back Seat Roll, a full sister to Back Seat Kiss.

American Cherub won the second trial by two lengths in :59.37. Dick Cappelucci trained and Alfredo Juarez Jr. rode the daughter of freshman sire American Anthem for owners Glen Robertson and Bobby J. McQueen.

American Cherub was making her first career start. A $31,000 yearling buy at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, the filly was bred by Kim Saunders, and she is the first starter produced by Be My Angel, a winning 12-year-old daughter of the Artax stallion Diabolical. Her second dam, the Dome mare Glory Be Mine, was a multiple stakes winner in New Mexico from 2009-11 and produced two stakes-placed runners, including Blaze To Glory, a full sister to Be Me Angel who ran third in the 2015 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R).
