On Saturday at Albuquerque Downs, the field was set for the September 20, $200,000-est. New Mexico State Fair Thoroughbred Futurity (R) for state-bred 2-year-olds.
Troubleonthetrack and Bully Baby (pictured) won the two 6-furlong trials. Trained by Nancy Summers for owner Wesley T. Gray, Troubleonthetrack made his debut with a 2 1/4-length victory in the first heat. J. Martin Bourdieu rode the homebred son of the Distorted Humor stallion Laugh Track, who covered his trip in 1:12.28.
Troubleonthetrack is one of three winners from as many starters produced by Super Sister, an unraced homebred daughter of the Saint Ballado stallion Your Eminence. The colt is a half brother to five-time New Mexico-bred stakes winner Waltzing Attila.
Bully Baby, a daughter of the Artax stallion Diabolical and a $50,000 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, won the second heat by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:12.06. Enrique Gomez rode the bay filly for owner J & SM Inc. of Fort Stockton, Texas, and trainer Fred Danley.
Bully Baby was bred by Bar Y Equine LLC. The filly is one of two winners from as many starters foaled by Shamrock Girl, a multiple stakes winning daughter of King Bull.
Bully Baby was coming off of a third-place finish in the August 16, 5 1/2-furlong Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) for state-bred 2-year-old fillies at Ruidoso Downs. All told, the filly has won two of five starts and has banked $25,910.
Other prominent State Fair Futurity qualifiers include stakes winner Delbert Too, and the stakes-placed Atill I Chime, Digger’s Gold, and One Mark. Delbert Too finished third, 2 1/2 lengths behind Troubleonthetrack, in the first trial. The bay son of the Bernardini stallion Marking is trained by Todd Fincher for owners B4 Farms LLC, Lee Owens, and Dale Alan Doby.
Delbert Too was coming off of a three-quarter length win in the 5 1/2-furlong, $135,000 Rio Grande Senor Futurity (R) on August 16. The gelding has earned $68,434 from three races.
Atill I Chime has banked $30,566 from three starts for owners Pierre and Leslie Amestoy of Albuquerque, who also bred the Attila’s Storm filly. Digger’s Gold is a homebred Quinton’s Gold gelding who ran second to Delbert Too in the Senor Futurity for owner Helen Nave. The second-place finisher in the 5-furlong, $163 Mountain Top Futurity (R), One Mark is a gelded son of Marking who has earned $33,483 from three outs for owners Ted Rushing and Lee Lewis.
