A total of 54 New Mexico-bred 3-year-old Quarter Horses, headed by the streaking Icy Morning Breeze, are entered in Saturday’s 400-yard Zia Derby (RG2) trials at Ruidoso Downs.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the July 31, $175,000-est. Zia Derby final.
Icy Morning Breeze has won her last three races, including the inaugural 350-yard, $91,000 Mountain Top Derby (R) for New Mexico-breds on June 19. Jackie Riddle trains the homebred Winners Version filly for the Estate of William R. and Mary Robertson.
Icy Morning Breeze drew post 3 and will be ridden by Hector Aldrete in the first of six trials.
Cavenaugh Quarter Horses LLC’s Woodys Gold, a son of Woodbridge and a $10,000 purchase at the 2019 New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale, returns to New Mexico off of a sixth-place finish in the May 29, $361,000 Heritage Place Derby (G3) at Remington Park. The gelding has earned $344,394 from eight outs, and his three wins include a 1 1/4-length victory in last year’s 400-yard, $387,000 New Mexico State Fair Futurity (RG3) at Albuquerque Downs.
Woodys Gold drew post 2 and will be ridden by Francisco Calderon for trainer Clint Crawford in the second heat.
Mark and Annette McCloy’s Hollyn Bootie prepped for her Zia Derby trial with a wire-to-wire, one-length victory in a 350-yard, $14,400 non-winners-of-two allowance dash for New Mexico-breds on June 26. Trained by Trey Wood, the homebred Big Daddy Cartel filly has won two of six outs, including last year’s 400-yard, $353,000 Zia Futurity (RG1), and she has banked $163,918.
Hollyn Bootie drew post 2 and will be ridden by Tanner Thedford in the sixths trial.
