Recent winners Holy Rebel and Waning Crecent are two of the 14 New Mexico-bred colts and geldings entered in Friday’s 5-furlong Rio Grande Senor Futurity (R) trials at Albuquerque Downs.
The top five finishers from the two trials will meet in the Rio Grande Senor Futurity final.
Holy Rebel is a homebred son of Holy Lute trained by Simon Buechler for owners Robert M. Driggers, Del Rae Driggers, and Ben Lee Ivey. The gray or roan gelding made his career debut with a 2 1/2-length victory in a 5-furlong Mountain Top Futurity (R) trial at Ruidoso Downs on June 7.
Holy Rebel is one of two winners from as many starters produced by Sidewinder Sally, a Mr Gold Mover mare who won the 2017 New Mexico Classics Oaks Championship (R) at Zia Park, and he is a half brother to the stakes-placed Stellar Rain gelding Sidewinder Slick. The gelding drew the rail post and will be ridden by Enrique Gomez in the first trial.
Waning Crecent is a dark bay or brown gelded son of Right Rigger trained by Bennie L. “Chip” Woolley for owner Tobby J. Therwanger. Waning Crecent broke his maiden with a three-quarter length victory in a Mountain Top Futurity trial.
Waning Crecent is one of six winners from seven starters foaled by Ecouter, an unraced daughter of the Mr. Prospector stallion Smart Strike, and he is a half brother to Gee Gee, a Danza filly who ran third in the March 25, $55,000 Miranda Diane Stakes (R) for Oklahoma-bred fillies and mares at Will Rogers Downs. The gelding drew post 5 and will be ridden by Tracy Hebert in the first heat.
