Ricanelo, a Big Daddy Cartel gelding and a $90,000 yearling purchase by owners Gene Bradley and Tod Bradley at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, is one of 10 New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds entered back in Sunday’s 350-yard, $341,362 Mountain Top Quarter Horse Futurity (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs.
The fastest qualifier from 13 trials contested on June 3, Ricanelo (pictured winning a training race at Remington Park) has earned $49,002 from three races in New Mexico and Oklahoma, and his spring resume included a fourth-place finish, three-quarters of a length behind winner Tres Crystals, in the March 19, $441,000 Oklahoma Futurity (G2) at Remington Park. The gelding scored a half-length victory in the second Mountain Top trial.
Ricanelo drew the rail post and will be ridden by Raul Ramirez Jr. for trainer Trey Wood.
