The fields for this year’s Rio Grande Senor Futurity (R) and Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) will be determined from 5 1/2-furlong trials run at Ruidoso Downs on Friday.

A total of 14 New Mexico-bred 2-year-old fillies are entered in two Rio Grande Senorita Futurity trials. Mark It Down, a homebred daughter of Marking trained by Dallas Barton for owners Mike Carson and Bill Carson, made her career debut with a wire-to-wire, 4 3/4-length victory in a 5 1/2-furlong, $23,000 maiden-special-weight race at Ruidoso Downs on July 9.

Mark It Down is one of three winners from four starters foaled by Lady Genius, a multiple stakes winning daughter of Quinton’s Gold and a half sister to multiple stakes winners Mr. Wizard, Beau Wizer, and Double Smart. The filly drew post 2 and will be ridden by Oscar Ceballos in the first Senorita Futurity trial.

Jana Trotter’s Sporting Pants, a stakes-placed Sporting Chance filly trained by Casey Lambert, is one of seven fillies entered in the second heat. Sporting Pants is coming off of a second-place finish, a head behind winner Community Leader, in the 5-furlong, $133,000 Mountain Top Futurity (R) on June 25.

Sporting Pants is a half sister to Bryns Mark, the winner of last year’s 6-furlong, $125,000 New Mexico Cup Lassie Championship (R) at Zia Park, and she is out of the multiple stakes winning Southwestern Heat mare Bryn’s Fancy Pants. The filly drew post 2 and will be ridden by Kelsi Purcell.

The top five finishers from each trial will meet in the $125,000 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity final on August 6.

Friday’s Rio Grande Senor Futurity trials have drawn 19 New Mexico-bred colts and geldings in two heats. Community Leader, a stakes-winning homebred son of the Artax stallion Diabolical racing for J. Kirk and Judy Robison, is the morning-line favorite for the first trial. Trained by Todd Fincher, the gelding has earned $71,180 from two outs, and his two wins include a head victory as the 13-10 favorite in the 5-furlong, $133,000 Mountain Top Futurity (R) on June 25.

Community Leader drew post 9 and will be ridden by Felipe Valdez.

The Robisons and Fincher will also be represented by the morning-line favorite in the second trial, Higher Ed. A homebred son of Sporting Chance, the gelding is coming off of a third-place finish, 1 1/4 lengths behind winner Community Leader, in the Mountain Top Futurity.

Higher Ed is out of African Heat, a daughter of Southwestern Heat who won the 2018 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R). The gelding drew post 9 and will be ridden by Christian Ramos.

The top five finishers from Friday’s Senor Futurity trials will meet in the August 6, $125,000 final.
