Ten state-bred 2-year-olds, topped by fastest qualifier Talbott (pictured), are entered back in Sunday’s 400-yard, $625,689 New Mexico State Fair Quarter Horse Futurity (RG3) at Albuquerque Downs.

A gray son of Big Daddy Cartel trained by Juan Carlos Gonzalez for owner Manuel Camacho, Talbott broke his maiden with a half-length win in the ninth of 11 trials on September 9. The gelding, who was purchased as a yearling for $23,000 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, has earned $5,060 from five races.

Talbott drew post 10 and will be ridden by Carlos Guillen Chacon.

Trainer Wes Giles will send out three finalists, including Codex, a Big Daddy Cartel gelding racing for Uno Mas and a $160,000 buy at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Codex has won two of five starts and has banked $42,281, and his record includes a fourth-place finish, two lengths behind winner KJ Daddys Money, in the August 7, $380,000 Zia Futurity (RG1) at Ruidoso Downs.

Codex is coming off of a clear 1 1/2-length victory in his State Fair Futurity trial. The gelding drew post 7 and will be ridden by Adrian Ramos.
