Thirty New Mexico-bred 2-year-old Thoroughbreds — all of whom will be making their first career starts — are entered in Friday’s 5-furlong Mountain Top Futurity (R) trials at Ruidoso Downs.
The top performers from Friday’s four trials will meet in the June 25, $150,000 Mountain Top Futurity final.
Make Up A Story, the morning-line favorite in the first trial, is a homebred daughter of Marking trained by Todd Fincher for owners J. Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas. The chestnut filly will be the first starter produced by Holiday Heat, a homebred winning daughter of the Gone West stallion Southwestern Heat. Her second dam, the winning Sharp Humor mare Del Mar Holiday, ran third in the 2013 Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs and is a half sister to 10-time stakes winner Winning Image.
The second heat is headed by morning-line choice Higher Ed, a homebred son of the Tiznow stallion Sporting Chance trained by Todd Fincher for owners J. Kirk and Judy Robison. Higher Ed will be the first starter foaled by African Heat, a homebred 7-year-old Southwestern Heat mare who won two stakes in New Mexico from 2018-19, including the 2018 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred juvenile fillies at Ruidoso Downs.
Fincher will send out Pocket Watch in Friday’s third trial. A homebred daughter of Sporting Chance campaigned by Pierre and Leslie Amestoy, Pocket Watch will be the sixth starter produced by Pocketfullachime, a homebred stakes-winning daughter of the Dixieland Band stallion Chimes Band, and she is a half sister to 2020 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) runner-up Atill I Chime.
Boldly Believe, a bay daughter of Sporting Chance trained by Todd Fincher for owner Joe Dee Brooks, is the morning-line favorite in the fourth and final heat. Boldly Believe is out of Bold Jubilation, a winning New York-bred daughter of the Two Punch stallion Smoke Glacken, and the filly is a half sister to five-time stakes winner Stormin The Jewels.
