A dozen state-bred fillies and mares, led by early favorites Warm Red Wine (pictured) and Brookes Legacy, are entered in Sunday’s 350-yard, $50,000 New Mexico Classics Distaff Stakes (R) at Zia Park.
The New Mexico Classics Distaff Stakes is part of a 10-race all-Quarter Horse program that includes seven stakes. Post time for the first race is set for 12:05 p.m. (MST).
Warm Red Wine is a stakes-winning 4-year-old daughter of Big Daddy Cartel trained by Juan Meraz for owner Jose E. Meraz, who purchased the sorrel mare for $40,000 at the 2020 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Warm Red Wine has earned $84,644 from seven races this season, and her three wins include a wire-to-wire, three-quarter length victory in the October 28, 350-yard Champagne Lane Stakes (R) at Albuquerque Downs.
Warm Red Wine drew post 10 and will be ridden by Daniel Amaya.
Brookes Legacy will be shortening in distance off of her second-place finish, a half of a length behind winner Milagro Lady, in the 400-yard, $200,000 New Mexico Filly & Mare Championship (RG1) at Zia Park on November 26. The gray 4-year-old daughter of Big Daddy Cartel opened her 2023 campaign with a two-race win streak that included a neck victory in the 400-yard, $100,000 Lou Wooten/Sydney Valentini Stakes (RG2) at Sunland Park on January 14.
Brookes Legacy is trained by Armando Alamos for owner Oscar Diaz. The mare drew post 9 and will be ridden by Manuel Gutierrez.
