Cheese Tray (pictured) and Thunder Dome will renew their rivalry in Sunday’s 1 1/16-mile, $100,000 Albert & Henry Dominguez Memorial Handicap (R) for New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds at Sunland Park.
A homebred 5-year-old son of Attila’s Storm racing for J. Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas, Cheese Tray has won his last two starts, including the 6 1/2-furlong, $100,000 Jamison Memorial Handicap (R) on January 29. The bay gelding drew the rail post and will be ridden by Luis Fuentes for trainer Todd Fincher.
Thunder Dome is trained by Dallas Barton for owners Mike H. Carson and Bill Carson, and he is coming off of a second-place finish, a nose behind Cheese Tray, in the Jamison Memorial. During his 2022 campaign, the 9-year-old Dome gelding earned $107,660 from just three outs, and he ended his season with a three-quarter length victory over runner-up Cheese Tray in the 1-mile, $125,000 Rocky Gulch New Mexico Cup Championship (R) at Zia Park on October 30.
Thunder Dome drew post 6 and will be ridden by Oscar Ceballos.
