Fifteen New Mexico State Fair Quarter Horse Futurity (RG2) trials will dominate Friday’s program at Albuquerque Downs.
Post time for the first trial is set for 12 p.m. (MDT). The last heat is scheduled to go off at 5:50. The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the October 15 final, which is expected to offer a purse of $1 million, the richest state-bred purse in New Mexico racing history.
Four graded stakes winners — Call Me Jessiecartel (pictured), Daddysqueenofalice, Jetting Thru Clouds, and Crispyn — are among the 148 state-bred 2-year-olds entered in Friday’s 400-yard trials. A $23,000 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, Call Me Jessiecartel is trained by Eric Valenzuela for owners Empire Racing and Pavon Racing LLC. The gelded son of Jess A Chicks has earned $240,124 from six races, and he is coming off of a nose victory in the 400-yard, $388,000 Zia Futurity (RG1) at Ruidoso Downs on July 23.
Call Me Jessiecartel drew post 4 and will be ridden by Sergio Becerra Jr. in the third trial.
Daddysqueenofalice is coming off of a Ruidoso Downs summer campaign during which she banked $145,780 from four starts and scored a wire-to-wire, one-length victory in the 350-yard, $341,000 Mountain Top Futurity (RG2) on June 18. James Gonzales III trains the Big Daddy Cartel filly and $180,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale purchase for owners Triple R Racing Stables LLC and Kim Middleton.
Daddysqueenofalice drew post 7 and will be ridden by Ricky Ramirez in the 13th heat.
Jetting Thru Clouds is a homebred Jet Black Patriot filly owned and trained by Joel Gutierrez. Jetting Thru Clouds has earned $123,394 from five races, and her two wins include a half-length victory in the 350-yard, $254,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity (RG3) at SunRay Park in May.
Jetting Thru Clouds drew post 4 and will be ridden by Brian C. Barraza.
Crispyn will be shortening in distance off of his second-place finish in a 440-yard All American Futurity (G1) trial at Ruidoso Downs on August 12. However, the gelded son of A Royal Jess has earned $257,245 from six races, and his record includes a neck victory in the 300-yard, $366,000 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park in April. He also ran a close second to Call Me Jessiecartel in the Zia Futurity.
Crispyn drew post 6 and will be ridden by Esgar Ramirez for owner MRB Racing LLC, and trainer Manuel Rodolfo Rodriguez.
