Fifty-three state-bred 3-year-old Quarter Horses are entered in Saturday’s 400-yard New Mexico State Fair Derby (RG3) trials at Albuquerque Downs.
Doing Something Good (pictured), a son of Big Daddy Cartel trained by Fred Danley for owner J & SM Inc., will be facing state-bred company off of his fifth-place finish in a 440-yard All American Derby (G1) trial on August 13. A $110,000 purchase at the 2021 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, the bay gelding has earned $94,515 from six races this season, and his summer campaign included a neck victory in the 400-yard, $205,000 Zia Derby (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs on July 22.
Doing Something Good drew post 6 and will be ridden by Noe Garcia Jr. in the third of six trials.
Woodys Storm brings in a three-race win streak that includes a neck victory in the 400-yard, $100,000 New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association Stakes (RG2) at Sunland Park on April 1. Jorge Morales-Flores trains the sorrel daughter of Woodbridge for owner Kenia Pinela Marioni.
Woodys Storm drew post 9 and will be ridden by Luis Martinez in the third heat.
Other graded stakes winners entered in Saturday’s trials include KJ Daddys Money. KJ Daddys Money is a homebred Big Daddy Cartel filly trained by Wes Giles for owners John Lee, Kathy Lee, and Ruben Mares. KJ Daddys Money has banked $103,640 from five starts this season, and her two wins include a neck victory in the March 4, 350-yard Sunburst Stakes (RG3) for New Mexico-bred 3-year-old fillies at Sunland Park.
KJ Daddys Money drew post 7 and will be ridden by Adrian Ramos int he fifth trial.
The 10 fastest qualifiers from Saturday’s trials will meet in the October 15, $250,000-added New Mexico State Fair Derby final.
