A dozen state-bred 2-year-old Quarter Horses, led by fastest qualifier and graded stakes winner Crispyn (pictured), are entered back in Sunday’s 400-yard New Mexico State Fair Futurity (RG2) at Albuquerque Downs.

This year’s New Mexico State Fair Futurity will offer a stakes-record purse of $1,208,668, making it the world’s richest state-bred Quarter Horse futurity.

A homebred son of the Mr Jess Perry stallion A Royal Jess, Crispyn is trained by Manuel Rodolfo Rodriguez for owner MRB Racing LLC. The bay gelding made his local debut with a neck victory in the ninth of 15 State Fair Futurity trials on September 22.

All told, Crispyn has earned $261,885 from seven races, and his four wins include a neck victory in the April 1, $366,000 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park. The gelding drew post 2 and will be ridden by Esgar Ramirez.

Martin Ybarra’s Young Emperor, a graded stakes placed son of the Mr Jess Perry stallion Eye Am King trained by Eric Valenzuela, drew post 7 and will be ridden by Sergio Becerra Jr. A $30,000 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, the sorrel gelding has won two of five races and has banked $54,609, and he is coming off of a Ruidoso Downs summer campaign during which he ran third, a head behind winner Call Me Jessiecartel, in the 400-yard, $388,000 Zia Futurity (RG1).

Other contenders include MJ Farms’ Bella De Ball, a stakes-winning homebred Eye Am King filly trained by Wes Giles. Bella De Ball has earned $28,040 from four starts, and her two wins include a neck victory in the July 23, $50,000 Zia Juvenile Stakes (R) at Ruidoso Downs.

Bella De Ball drew post 5 and will be ridden by Alan Hernandez.
