Fine Am Eye (pictured), a sorrel daughter of Eye Am King owned by Backdoor Thoroughbreds, is one of 10 state-bred 3-year-old Quarter Horses entered back in Sunday’s 400-yard, $435,209 New Mexico State Fair Derby (RG3) at Albuquerque Downs.
A $27,000 yearling purchase at the 2021 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, Fine Am Eye has earned $110,508 from 17 races, and her six wins include a half-length victory in the last of six State Fair Derby trials on September 23. The filly’s season record includes a second-place finish, a neck behind winner KJ Daddys Money, in the March 4, 350-yard Sunburst Stakes (RG3) for New Mexico-bred sophomore fillies at Sunland Park.
Fine Am Eye drew post 4 and will be ridden by Bryan Candanosa for trainer Fred Danley.
KJ Daddys Money, a homebred Big Daddy Cartel filly trained by Wes Giles for owners John Lee, Kathy Lee, and Ruben Mares, drew post 5 and will be ridden by Alan Hernandez. The fourth-fastest qualifier, KJ Daddys Money has banked $105,240 from six outs this season, and she ended her 2-year-old season with a victory in the 400-yard, $380,000 Zia Futurity (RG1) at Ruidoso Downs.
