A dozen New Mexico-bred Quarter Horses, all of whom will be making their 2024 season debuts, are entered in Sunday’s 400-yard, $100,000 Red or Green Stakes (RG2) at Sunland Park.
White Lightenin (pictured), a graded stakes winning 4-year-old son of the Mr Jess Perry stallion Eye Am King racing for Denis and Julie Schoenhofer, drew post 10 and will be ridden by Noe Garcia Jr. for trainer James Gonzales II. White Lightenin is coming off of a wire-to-wire victory in the November 26, $229,000 New Mexico Classics Derby (RG2) at Zia Park.
A $32,000 yearling purchase at the 2021 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, White Lightenin has earned $286,023 from 12 races, all in New Mexico. The gelding will be seeking his second career stakes victory on Sunday.
Other contenders include Doin Something Right, a 4-year-old Eye Am King gelding trained by Marco Flores for owners Empire Racing and Pavon Racing LLC. Doin Something Right will be making his first start since October 15, when he scored a head victory in the 400-yard, $60,000 New Mexico State Fair Sophomore Stakes (R) at Albuquerque Downs.
