Sunday’s 10-race Sunland Park Derby (G3) program at Sunland Park will feature two stakes restricted to New Mexico-bred 3-year-old Thoroughbreds.
The featured race on the card — the 1 1/16-mile, $400,000 Sunland Park Derby (G3) — will be run as the ninth race and will offer Kentucky Derby (G1) qualifying points to the first four finishers. Stronghold, a California-based homebred son of Ghostzapper trained by Phil D’Amato for owners Eric M. Waller and Sharon Waller, is coming off of a second-place finish, a half of a length behind winner Wynstock, in the 1 1/16-mile, $200,000 Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) on December 16.
Other Sunland Derby contenders include Lucky Jeremy, a stakes-winning son of Lookin At Lucky trained by William E. Morey for owner Jeremy Ramsland. Lucky Jeremy will be stretching out in distance off of his two-length victory in the January 19, 1-mile Riley Allison Derby at Sunland Park.
The Kentucky Derby qualifying points for the Sunland Derby break down as follows: 20 to the winner, 10 to second, six to third, four to fourth and two to fifth.
Also on Sunday, Kentucky Oaks (G1) qualifying points will be up for grabs in the 1-mile, $250,000 Sunland Park Oaks. Twenty points will be earned by the winner, followed by 10 by the runner, six by the third-place filly, four by the fourth-place filly, and two by the fifth-place filly.
Six 3-year-old fillies are entered in the Sunland Park Oaks, led by local contender and morning-line favorite Candy Aisle. Trained by Todd Fincher for owners Randy Andrews, Jim Cone, Brad King and Lee Lewis, the Kentucky-bred Gun Runner filly has won her last three starts and is coming off of a one-length victory in the 6 1/2-furlong, $65,000 Borderplex Stakes at Sunland Park.
Two other open stakes — the 1-mile, $100,000 Harry Henson Handicap for fillies and mares, and the 6 1/2-furlong, $100,000 Bill Thomas Memorial Stakes for 3-year-olds and older — will be run on Sunday.
