CHR Racing’s Woody Rocks (pictured) is the fastest qualifier to the July 21, $368,451 Zia Futurity (RG1) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-old Quarter Horses.

At Ruidoso Downs on Friday, Woody Rocks won the 12th of 13 400-yard trials by a clear 2 1/2 lengths in :19.812. Christian Ramos rode the gelded son of the Dash Ta Fame stallion Woodbridge for trainer Tony Sedillo.

Woody Rocks was bred by Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico, and he was a $25,000 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs. The sorrel gelding is out of JR Rock Star, a stakes-winning son of Fantastic Corona Jr.

Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Woody Rocks has won three of four starts — including the June 16, 350-yard Mountain Top Juvenile Stakes (R) at Ruidoso Downs — and he has earned $33,483.

Second-fastest qualifier KJ Bad Moon Rising broke his maiden with a 1 1/2-length win in the 13th heat. Prepped by Wes Giles for owners John Lee and Kathy Lee, KJ Bad Moon Rising stopped the timer in :19.893 while earning his first win in two outs. Adrian Ramos rode the homebred gelded son of the Apollitical Jess stallion KJ Mucho Macho Man.

KJ Bad Moon Rising was increasing his earnings to $8,000. The gelding is out of KJ Kiss Me Goodbye, an unplaced 8-year-old daughter of 2009 AQHA champion aged stallion First Moonflash.

The third-fastest qualifier, Rancho El 48’s Mendel, won the fourth trial by 2 1/2 lengths in :19.914. Francisco Calderon rode the gray son of Big Daddy Cartel for trainer James Gonzales III.

Mendel was coming off of a sixth-place finish, 3 1/4 lengths behind winner Harken, in the 350-yard, $351,000 Mountain Top Futurity (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs on June 16. The gelding was bred by MJ Farms, and he was a $160,000 yearling buy at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale.

Mendel is out of Diamondia, a winning daughter of ’94 AQHA champion 2-year-old colt Mr Jess Perry and a half sister to multiple graded stakes winner Wild Six. The gelding has won two of three starts and has earned $29,979.
