Bertha S. Irigoyen’s Jess A Satin Flash, a 7-year-old son of champion First Moonflash, heads a field of New Mexico-bred Quarter Horses entered in Sunday’s 440-yard, $75,000 First Moonflash Maturity (R) at Albuquerque Downs.

Jess A Satin Flash will be stretching out in distance off of his upset victory at odds of 13-1 in the 400-yard, $50,000 Zia Handicap (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs on July 25. The gelding has earned $45,000 from four starts this season, but he is seeking his first career win at the quarter-mile distance.

Jess A Satin Flash drew post 6 and will be ridden by Alejandro Medellin for trainer Rene Saucedo.

Other contenders include defending First Moonflash Maturity champion Marcus Medallion, a 7-year-old Jesse James Jr gelding owned and trained by Jaime Aldavaz Sr., and Freedom Flash, a stakes winner during the 2019-20 Sunland Park meet.

Marcus Medallion will be making his first official start since February 22, when the gelding finished third, a neck behind winner DJs Winner, in the 350-yard, $100,000 Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap (RG2) at Sunland Park. Marcus Medallion drew post 5 and will be ridden by Manuel Gutierrez.

Freedom Flash is a homebred 4-year-old son of First Moonflash trained by Jimmy Padgett for owners Pierre and Leslie Amestoy of Albuquerque and Roger K. Beasley. The gelding has banked $70,000 from three outs this season, and he placed first in the 400-yard, $100,000 Jess Burner Memorial Handicap (RG1) at Sunland Park on January 4.

Freedom Flash drew post 10 and will be ridden by Alonso Rivera.
