Eight New Mexico-bred Quarter Horses, headed by Byron Woodard’s No Mires A La Luna (pictured, orange cap), are entered in Saturday’s 400-yard, $50,000 Jess Burner Stakes (R) at Ruidoso Downs.
No Mires A La Luna is coming off of a half-length victory at odds of 11-1 in the 400-yard, $40,000 Zia Handicap (RG2) on July 31. The homebred 5-year-old First Moonflash gelding drew post 3 and will be ridden by Lucas Constantin for trainer Marc Jungers.
Other contenders include Rex Wells’ Colby James and Antonio D. Gomez’s Diamond And A Half. A 4-year-old Jesse James Jr gelding trained by James Gonzales II, Colby James has earned $36,908 from just three races this season, and he scored a half-length victory in the 400-yard, $56,000 Jimmy Drake Stakes (RG3) at SunRay Park on May 16.
Colby James drew post 5 and will be ridden by Mario Delgado.
Diamond And A Half is a 5-year-old daughter of First Moonflash trained by Jorge Luis Hernandez. The mare earned a neck win in the 350-yard, $25,000 Rita Danley Stakes (R) for state-bred fillies and mares on June 26.
Diamond And A Half drew post 2 and will be ridden by Jose Enrique Ortiz.
