Bigg Dee and HS Golden Eagle (pictured) are among the dozen New Mexico-bred Quarter Horses entered in Sunday’s 400-yard, $100,000 Jimmy Drake Stakes (RG3) at SunRay Park.
A 4-year-old son of the Corona Cartel stallion Big Daddy Cartel, Bigg Dee is trained by James J. Gonzales III for owner Rex Wells. The gelding will be making his first start since February 12, when he scored a wire-to-wire, half-length victory in the 350-yard, $100,000 Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap (RG2) at Sunland Park.
Bigg Dee has earned $427,154 from 18 races, but the Jimmy Drake Stakes will mark his first-ever start at SunRay Park. The gelding drew post 4 and will be ridden by Mario Delgado.
HS Golden Eagle will be making the second start of her 3-year-old season and first start against aged runners. The runner-up to River Flash in the April 24, $100,000 New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association Stakes (RG2) for state-bred sophomores at Sunland Park, the sorrel filly is trained by Armando Alamos for owner Lucina Salas Lopez.
HS Golden Eagle has banked $241,048 from 10 outs, and her two wins include a 1 3/4-length victory in last year’s 400-yard, $396,000 New Mexico State Fair Futurity (RG3) at Albuquerque Downs. The filly drew post 6 and will be ridden by Carlos Guillen Chacon.
