Jesses Wish (pictured), a graded stakes winning son of Jesse James Jr racing for Javier M. Chavez and Heysol Howlet, will make his next start in Saturday’s 400-yard New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) for state-bred 2-year-olds at Zia Park.

Jesses Wish will be making his first start since July 15, when the gelding ran fourth in a 400-yard Zia Futurity (RG1) trial at Ruidoso Downs. However, Jesses Wish began his career with a two-race win streak that included a neck victory in the 300-yard, $313,000 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park on April 3.

A $50,000 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, Jesses Wish has earned $153,965 from four races. The gelding drew post 9 and will be ridden by Mario Delgado for trainer James Gonzales III in the sixth of eight trials.

A total of 80 2-year-olds are entered in Saturday’s trials, including stakes winners Gemologist and Mr Tres Effort. A $9,000 yearling buy at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, Gemologist is coming off of a half-length victory in the August 7, $50,000 Zia Juvenile Invitational Stakes (R) at Ruidoso Downs. Eloy Navarro trains the gelded son of Jess A Chicks for owner Jose Aguilar Mendoza.

Gemologist drew post 5 and will be ridden by Luis Martinez in the second heat.

Mr Tres Effort races for Carlos F. Paez from the barn of trainer Eric Valenzuela. A homebred son of TF Featured Effort, the gelding was a prompt 7-2 favorite in the 400-yard, $100,000 New Mexico State Fair Juvenile Stakes (R) at Albuquerque Downs on September 25.

Mr Tres Effort was also a finalist in the New Mexican Spring Futurity. The gelding drew post 7 and will be ridden by Luis Flores-Garcia in the sixth trial.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the October 30, $325,000-est. New Mexico Cup Futurity final.
