Eight New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds, topped by morning-line favorite Blazing Navarone (pictured), have been entered in Sunday’s 6 1/2-furlong, $100,000 Johnie L. Jamison Handicap (R) at Sunland Park.
A 5-year-old son of Song Of Navarone, Blazing Navarone is trained by Martin Valdez-Cabral for owner Barbara M. Coleman. The gelding is coming off of a wire-to-wire, one-length victory as the 6-5 choice in a 6 1/2-furlong allowance-optional claiming ($40,000) race for New Mexico-breds at Sunland Park on December 29.
Blazing Navarone has won 11 of 23 starts and has earned $561,316. A multiple stakes winner, he drew post 5 and will be ridden by Ry Eikleberry.
Maurcenia Cross’ Jet N G, a homebred 5-year-old Mr. Trieste gelding trained by Gary Cross, drew post 6 and will be ridden by Roimes Chirinos. Jet N G has banked $156,450 from 18 outs, and his four wins include a four-length victory in a 6 1/2-furlong, $34,000 open-condition allowance for state-breds at Sunland Park on January 12.
