The trials for Quarter Horse racing’s richest and most prestigious race, the 440-yard, $3-million All American Futurity (G1), will be run at Ruidoso Downs this weekend, and 17 registered New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds are entered in the 30 heats.

Fifteen trials will be run on Friday and Saturday. Post time for the first race each day is set for 12 p.m. (MDT). The five fastest qualifiers from each day will meet in the All American Futurity final on Labor Day, September 6.

Here is a closer look at the New Mexico-breds entered in this year’s All American Futurity trials.

FRIDAY
Blonds Have Mo Fun (Race 1) — Owned by C. Ray Collins and trained by Juan M. Gonzalez, this First Moonflash colt made his debut with a sixth-place finish at odds of 22-1 in a 330-yard, $20,000 maiden-special-weight dash for New Mexico-breds on August 7.

Warm Red Wine (Race 1) — Owned by Jose Merez and trained by Jose Luis Muela, this Big Daddy Cartel filly was a $40,000 purchase at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, and she is a half sister to graded stakes winner Sandys Jesse. Warm Red Wine has earned $632 from three races at Remington Park in Oklahoma City and Ruidoso Downs.

JM Special Caliente (Race 6) — Owned by Ventura M Ranch LLC and trained by Ivan Tafoya, this son of the Walk Thru Fire stallion JM Specialwynn has banked $499 from three starts in New Mexico.

Run Time (Race 6) — Owned by Ezra Lee and trained by Wes Giles, this homebred Big Daddy Cartel filly has won two of five races and has earned $27,401, and her record includes a second-place finish in the 300-yard, $61,000 Desert Classic Futurity (R) at Turf Paradise on April 28. She also was a finalist in the June 20, $280,000 Mountain Top Futurity (RG2) for New Mexico-breds at Ruidoso Downs. Run Time is out of First Prize Amanda, a half sister to 2008 West Texas Futurity (G1) winner Fast Prize Zoom.

EBW Deception (Race 9) — Owned by Ernie and Brenda Wood and trained by Juan M. Gonzalez, this homebred First Moonflash filly made her debut with a ninth-place finish in a 300-yard, $18,000 maiden-special-weight race at Ruidoso Downs on August 7. She is out of EBW Obsession, a homebred daughter of Brimmerton who won the ‘09 John Deere New Mexico Juvenile Challenge (G3).
 
Wente (Race 13) — Owned by Scott Branson and Jimmy Vasquez and trained by Albert Valles, this Big Daddy Cartel gelding was a $36,000 yearling buy at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale. Wente has earned $2,569 from three starts in New Mexico and Oklahoma, and she is coming off of a second-place finish in a 400-yard Zia Futurity (RG1) trial on July 16. The filly’s dam, the Jesse James Jr mare Astica, was the sport’s champion 3-year-old filly in 2015, and she is a half sister to 2021 Rainbow Oaks runner-up and ‘20 Rainbow Futurity (G1) finalist Valiant Astica.

JM Special Ferarri (Race 15) — Owned by Ventura M Ranch LLC and trained by Ivan Tafoya, this JM Specialwynn colt made his debut with a neck victory at odds of 35-1 in a 350-yard Ruidoso Futurity (G1) trial on May 29. He is out of Pyc Ferarri Prize, a winning 8-year-old Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare.

Flash The Diamonds (Race 15) — Owned by Dosi and Norma Alvarez and trained by Seth Ferguson, this homebred First Moonflash colt has earned $180 from two starts. Flash The Diamonds is out of Diamonds N Rainbows, a winning and graded stakes placed daughter of the Yawls Rabbit stallion Rabbits Rainbow.

SATURDAY
Tenacious Jess (Race 3) — Owned by Roberto Rey-Chacon and trained by Juan D. Torres, this sorrel son of the Mr Jess Perry stallion A Royal Jess has banked $485 from three starts at Ruidoso Downs.

Mitey Keymeera (Race 3) — Owned by Charles and Dixie Patterson and trained by Donna McArthur, this daughter of A Revenant made her debut with a sixth-place run in a 350-yard, $11,700 maiden-special-weight dash on August 1. She is out of Mitey Moon, a 10-year-old daughter of champion First Moonflash who won the 2013 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) at Zia Park, and she is a half sister to stakes placed runners Mitey Political and Surfz Up.

Legende (Race 6) — Owned by Jose R. Espinosa and trained by Wes Giles, this Big Daddy Cartel gelding was a $53,000 buy at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Legende has banked $1,500 from two races, and he is stretching out in distance off of a second-place finish in a 400-yard Zia Futurity (RG1) trial on July 16. The gelding is out of Alice K White, a First Down Dash mare and the sport’s champion 3-year-old filly in 2009, and he is a full brother to two-time graded stakes winner and All American Futurity (G1) runner-up Bigg Daddy, and a half to champion Astica.

Moon Gunner (Race 7) — Owned by Jim and Michelle Laird and trained by Wes Giles, this homebred First Moonflash gelding is coming off of a third-place finish in a 400-yard, $18,000 maiden-special-weight race on August 6.

Smithy Cartel (Race 12) — Owned by Holly Hill Ranch LLC and trained by Martin Orona Sr., this Big Daddy Cartel gelding is unplaced in three starts at Ruidoso Downs. A $38,000 yearling purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, he is out of Starsmith, a winning daughter of 2001 champion 2-year-old Tres Seis, and he is a half brother to 2014 Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) winner Woodys Allstar.

Royal Catrina (Race 14) — Owned by Roberto Rey-Chacon and trained by Juan D. Torres, this daughter of A Royal Jess has banked $1,570 from three races. She traces back to her second dam, Ms Pilot Point, a daughter of Splash Bac who won the ‘06 AQHA East Distaff Challenge (G3) at Delta Downs.

Lil Rev (Race 14) — Owned by Guadalupe Cortez and trained by Albert Valles, this A Revenant gelding was a $75,000 yearling buy at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale. Lil Rev has earned $10,416 from three outs, and he was a finalist in the June 20, $280,000 Mountain Top Futurity (RG2). The gelding is out of Natalie Dash, a winning daughter of First Down Dash and a finalist in the 2011 PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity (G2) at Los Alamitos.

JM Un Poco Loco (Race 14) — Owned by Ventura M Ranch LLC and trained by Ivan Tafoya, this JM Specialwynn colt has earned $400 from two races at Ruidoso Downs.
